Bunk beds can add excitement and drama to a child's room. Ms. Keenan adds a shelf to store books or a reading lamp in every sleeping nook to make bunk beds more attractive to children.
A lot of our kids' beds bunks can be converted to two complete twin beds ideal if you are planning to have your children move to their own bedrooms at some point. Pick from finishes like brushed gray, creamy white and rich walnut.
Stairs and ladders
If you're looking for bunk beds for kids there is the option to pick between ladders or stairs. Ladders can be installed easily and are less expensive. They also offer an easy way to get into the top bunk bed. They are also considered safer than stairs, since they have a wider area for children to step on and have a built-in handrail. Ladders usually have grooves in the steps to prevent slips when climbing up and down the bed.
If you prefer the style and look of stairs, then they can make an elegant addition to your bunk bed. They can also be used in rooms with limited space since they don't protrude as ladders. They are often constructed of metal or wood and can complement the various styles of bedrooms. Some staircases come with storage drawers that can be a great way to increase the size of a bunk bed.
Another factor to consider when choosing between stairs and a ladder is the age of your child. It is recommended that children under 6 years old not sleep on the top bunk. Older children who are able to climb vertically might be better off with stairs than climbing a ladder. If you are planning to use your bunk bed to accommodate guests, such as older children or adults with limited mobility, it is best to choose stairs.
A straight staircase that runs along the side of the bunk requires a minimum of 95" of space on each side. If you don't have that much space, you can choose a u-shaped staircase that doesn't require as much space, but provides a safe and secure means of accessing the top bunk. Some beds come with the option of detaching the stairs when not being used, which reduces their footprint and makes them more suited for rooms with multiple uses. You can also find staircases that connect to the ends of the bed and eliminate the requirement for a separate handrail and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
bunk bed for kids give kids the confidence and the freedom to climb into and out of bed on their own. However, they must be placed properly, making sure that there are no gaps or movement occurs between rails of the guard and bed frame. If you decide to use guard rails, follow the instructions of the manufacturer and inspect them on a regular basis for any holes or looseness that could lead to entrapment.
One of the most important safety tips for bunk beds is to ensure they are kept away from electrical devices as well as other items that could become projectiles while your children play or sleep. Be sure to place bunks away from windows, which can cause a risk of falling in the event that children climb on the top of the bed.
One safety feature you might think about is a night light for the ladder. it will help illuminate the path up and down in the event that kids awake at night to go to the bathroom or get woken during a storm, and need to get out of their room in a safe manner.
Another excellent security feature for bunk beds is a safety net which can be placed on the top of the bunk to stop children from falling off while asleep or playing. This is a great idea for older children, who are more likely to sleep in the top bunk.
The guardrails must be secured to the bunk beds and can't be removed without tools. The openings in the guardrail above the mattress base should not be larger than 3.5 inches wide to avoid strangulation or entrapment. Place the wedge block as shown in Figure 1 in each of the openings in the topmost guardrail member, and above the mattress foundation. Apply 33 lbf (147 N) in a direction perpendicular the plane of the larger edge of the block for one minute.
It is also a good idea to teach youngsters not to hang things on the ladders or guardrails for example, such as clothing, belts and sports equipment. Instead, a clothes rack is recommended to ensure that these items aren't a strangulation risk for your child(ren). Make sure that no more than one child can sleep on the top bunk. This could result in a dangerous imbalance and falls.
Mattresses
When choosing a mattress to use for bunk beds, take into account the size of your child and their age. A bunk mattress should last for at least eight years or until siblings stop sharing a bedroom. You'll want to select one that grows with your child, and still offer enough comfort as they age.
Bunk mattress sizes are typically full-size or twin, and there are plenty of options that can fit either. If your child suffers from allergies or asthma you should choose an allergy-free mattress with a dust mite barrier and a cover that wicks moisture. Mattresses with an antimicrobial coating will protect the foam from harmful bacteria and germs.
Another important consideration is the feeling of your mattress. Kids are usually lighter than adults and need mattresses that are firm, but also comfortable. Many latex and hybrid mattresses come with an extra firm side as well as a soft side that can accommodate both children's requirements.
Memory foam mattresses are good for children, but we wouldn't recommend them due to their tendency not to cool properly and could be hard on the spines of infant children. Consider a hybrid or latex mattress instead, which will provide solid support with cooling infusions to ensure that your child or guest asleep cool and comfortable.

Low-profile mattresses are often the best choice for bunk beds for children. They are designed to be smaller than standard mattresses, and maximize the safety rail's height on the top bunk. They reduce "filler" materials to provide top quality and durability with slim lines.
If your child is looking to try a mattress thicker than a regular mattress, think about an hybrid or innerspring mattress with comfort layers above that can be removed or replaced as your child grows. These models will provide you with an idea of the durability of the mattress as your child grows. You can also put in a mattress skirt or bed pad to prevent it from sliding. Some mattresses have side rails or a lip built in to prevent this.
Storage
Bunk beds are a great alternative to save space in shared children's rooms. Bunk beds are also a less expensive alternative to purchasing two large single beds. Many bunks also provide the option of adding a trundle bed which can be hidden beneath the bunk that is not being used.
You might want to consider installing a bedroom for your child furniture set that has desks, bookcases, and/or dressers to maximize storage and space in a room with bunk beds. This will let you keep all your child's personal items such as clothing, toys and clothes in one place without cramming them into overstuffed closets or chests. The sets of kids bedroom furniture can be found from a variety of retailers. They meet federal safety standards.
The stacking bunks provide an ideal playground for children, as children can transform the spaces below into hidden places to play or cozy areas. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked six bunks to create the ultimate children' space. It can be used to sleep, play or even for superhero cape twirling. The room is decorated with bubble walls covered with Chasing Paper and a ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Blue Jean to create the ultimate getaway.
If you cannot install an stairwell to your stacked bunk beds then a ladder is a simple alternative. The ladders are constructed with a combination of Single Socket Tee Flange, Single Socket Tee, and 90 Degree Side Outlet Tee fittings. They can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between rungs of a ladder to make it easier for children to climb. The ladder rungs can also be set flush with the ground, rather than above, to make climbing easier.
Another method to maximize space in a room with bunk beds is to install loft beds for kids that can be moved down to just above the floor. This lets you slide dressers, desks or toy chests under the beds. This is an effective way to maximize space and can be a great option for smaller bedrooms or in a huge family home where the beds need to be able to accommodate a lot of people sleeping.
